Three variegated houseplants with quite different leaf shapes and habits, chosen to sit well together: a pink-flushed rubber plant, a marbled trailing pothos and a compact variegated peperomia.

Ficus elastica 'Belize' is a rubber plant with bold glossy oval leaves patterned in green, cream and pink, growing upright into a small indoor tree. Epipremnum aureum 'Marble Queen' is a pothos with heart-shaped leaves marbled white and green that will trail from a shelf or hanging planter or climb a moss pole. Peperomia obtusifolia 'Variegata', the variegated baby rubber plant, is a neat, bushy little plant with fleshy rounded leaves in green and cream that suits a desk or windowsill. Grouped together or spread around the house, they give a mix of texture and colour all year.

All three want bright, indirect light, which is what keeps the variegation strong; in a dull spot the pothos in particular fades towards plain green. Let the top of the compost dry out between waterings and never let the pots stand in water, because the peperomia especially stores water in its leaves and is easily overwatered. Keep them warm, between about 15C and 25C, away from cold draughts and radiators. Feed once a month from spring to early autumn. The ficus dislikes being moved, so settle it in one place.

Supplied as three established plants in 1 litre root balls, ready to pot into your own containers. The ficus and the pothos are harmful if eaten and their sap can irritate skin and eyes, so keep them away from children, cats and dogs; the pothos trails at exactly the height a cat will reach.
